In her short term legacy, Nancy Wake received the George Medal, a medal presented to those who had performed acts of bravery in the United Kingdom. She also received The Medal of Freedom, which recognizes those who have made "an especially meritorious contribution to the security of world peace," and the Croix de Guerre, an award given to individuals who distinguished themselves by acts of heroism involving combat with the enemy. |
After being awarded, she went back to Australia. From the confidence and respect she had gained in the war, she ran for Prime Minister against Dr. Herbert Evatt. She lost the election by a mere 250 votes, but her mission inspired other women to get involved in politics. In 1985, she published her autobiography, The White Mouse. The book became a bestseller and has been reprinted many times. Nancy has made a remarkable stamp on France's victory that will never be forgotten. Her legacy still lives on to this day.
